What Is a Slot?

slot

A slot is a position within a sequence, series, or set. The term is also used to refer to a specific time period, such as an hour or a day.

A computerized slot machine is a casino game in which players place coins or paper tickets with barcodes into a slot. The machine then activates a reel or multiple slots and pays out credits according to the pay table. Different symbols appear on each reel, and aligning several of these symbols in a winning line awards credits. Depending on the game, a payout can be anything from free spins to progressive jackpots. A slot’s design and symbols are often themed to match a particular theme or location.

The earliest mechanical slot machines were developed in the 1870s by Charles Fey, an American entrepreneur. He improved upon earlier machines by allowing automatic payouts and adding three reels. He also replaced poker symbols with more recognizable ones, such as horseshoes, hearts, and stylized lucky sevens. These symbols gave his new machine its name: the Liberty Bell slot.
